Hahn Launches $50,000 Golf Initiative for Southeast Los Angeles

Program will offer golf clinics and related opportunities designed for Latinas, seniors, youth, among others

Downey, CA — Yesterday, LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn launched her Golf Initiative for Southeast LA, a collaboration with the Latina Golfers Association (LGA). Hahn presented a $50,000 check to Azucena Maldonado, the organization’s founder. The LGA will use the funds to run five different programs for women, youth, mothers/daughters, middle school girls, and senior citizens. The goal of the initiative is to open not only playing golf to groups that have not historically participated in the sport, but giving them access to the various benefits that golf offers, from exercise to personal and professional advancement.

“Women and girls still face barriers in everything from sports to business to government, and for Latinas those hurdles are even higher. That means missing out not only on the fun of playing golf, but on all the great opportunities that golf offers,” said Hahn. “With this initiative, we’re going to help knock that barrier down for people who have been overlooked and underserved in golf.”

Dozens of participants signed up for the inaugural golf clinic held yesterday at the Los Amigos Golf Course in Downey, including middle school students, seniors, and local leaders among others. Councilmembers Dr. Monica Sanchez of Pico Rivera, Brenda Olmos of Paramount, and Gabriela Gomez of Bell Gardens also joined the launch, as well as Norwalk mayor Margarita Rios.

“The Latina Golfers Association is honored and humbled to receive the support and generous grant from Supervisor Janice Hahn,” said Maldonado. “Supervisor Hahn’s Tee It Up Golf Initiative for Southeast Los Angeles is going to have a huge impact in the lives of residents of all ages and the Latina Golfers Association is so excited to be given this opportunity to share the benefits of golf with the community.”

The Latina Golfers Association was founded in 2008 with the goal of “empowering girls and women using golf as the vehicle to break gender and cultural barriers in the business world.” Through their participation in LGA programs, participants are able to take part in business and corporate golf outings and networking opportunities.

Hahn Launches Dedicated Instagram Accounts for Unincorporated Communities

Los Angeles, CA — Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn has launched two new dedicated Instagram accounts for the unincorporated communities she represents: one for Walnut Park (@walnutparkgov) and one for the unincorporated communities of greater Whittier (@unincorporatedwhittier), which include South Whittier, East Whittier, Northwest Whittier, and West Whittier-Los Nietos.

“Residents of cities across LA County have access to useful and important information through city social media channels: from street improvements and construction updates to resources and events. The residents that call Walnut Park and the unincorporated communities of Greater Whittier home should have that access too,” said Hahn. “Now they will.”

As unincorporated areas, the County of Los Angeles serves as the local government for these communities. Its various departments carry out street improvements, housing policy, local parks, libraries, and public safety functions, among others. The greater Whittier unincorporated communities are home to some 95,000 residents. Walnut Park is home to approximately 16,000.

The accounts, which will be managed by Hahn’s communications team, will feature updates and news from Hahn’s office, information on construction projects, information about County resources available to residents, events in and around the communities, and more.
