Dear Mayor Cruikshank and Councilmembers,

I am writing to you about the five million dollars in funding that I am providing your city in response to the ongoing land movement that has devastated homes and communities across Rancho Palos Verdes. While I understand that the city has major costs associated with this disaster, I urge you to use this funding to immediately provide individual assistance to the impacted residents.

I talk to people every day who are at the end of their rope. We still need to fight for more state and federal resources. But in the meantime, our residents are getting more desperate every day, and they need this help now.

My office and the County stand ready to help you put together a process that expedites this assistance. We can’t allow this funding to be caught in any red tape. This is a crisis, and we need to meet this moment.

Sincerely,

JANICE HAHN
Supervisor, 4th District
County of Los Angeles

Rancho Palos Verdes, CA — Today, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn issued the following statement regarding Governor Newsom’s announcement today that he had declared a state of emergency in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes as residents continue to cope with the land movement crisis:

“Thank you, Governor Newsom. This declaration comes just at the right time as people are not only seeing their homes crumble around them, but have now also been cut off from power. This situation is bigger than the City or even the County. I appreciate the state for recognizing the enormity of this crisis.”

Hahn Applauds State Decision on RPV Landslide

Rancho Palos Verdes, CA – Today, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn is applauding a determination by the California Office of Emergency Services that the City of Rancho Palos Verdes can use a current State of Emergency to implement immediate emergency measures to help reduce further damage to the landslide area.

“I appreciate the State for providing the clarity the City of Rancho Palos Verdes needed,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “The County will continue to provide our support and assistance to the city as they address the very serious land movement crisis.”

On February 20, the City of Rancho Palos Verdes City Council requested the Governor consider proclaiming a State of Emergency to suspend and waive state permitting requirements to allow the City to immediately begin work on landslide stabilization measures. Supervisor Hahn supported the city council’s request and the County’s Office of Emergency Management acted as the intermediary to forward the city’s request to CalOES.

Today, a press statement released by the County of Los Angeles, the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, and the California Office of Emergency Services confirmed that the California Office of Emergency Services has determined that the City is able to utilize the current February 4 State of Emergency to implement immediate emergency measures to help reduce further damage to the landslide area. This includes the installation of additional drainage systems and wells to extract groundwater and other measures that would prevent surface water from adding to the saturation.

Hahn Urges Governor to Witness Land Movement for Himself

Rancho Palos Verdes, CA—Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn released the following statement urging Governor Gavin Newsom to come to Rancho Palos Verdes to see the destruction the land movement has caused:

“We need the Governor’s help. It is my understanding that the City of Rancho Palos Verdes will be asking the Governor to declare a State of Emergency for the Greater Portuguese Bend Landslide Complex. I think if the Governor came here and saw the buckling streets, the homes sinking and cracking apart, and the historic Wayfarers Chapel on the verge of collapsing, he would understand the urgency of this request. This is a crisis that is getting worse by the day, and I urge Governor Newsom to visit us and see it with his own eyes.”
