Hahn Proclaims ``India Independence Day`` in Los Angeles County
August 13, 2025
Los Angeles, CA– Yesterday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by Supervisor Janice Hahn to proclaim August 15, 2025 as “India Independence Day” in Los Angeles County.
“Our Indian American community is an integral part of the fabric of LA County. I am so proud to represent this large and growing community, and join them in celebrating almost eight decades of independence for a rising, vibrant India,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn.
August 15, 2025 will mark the 79th anniversary of India’s independence from over 200 years of British rule. Los Angeles County is home to over 98,000 Indians, who are among one of the fastest growing South Asian group. Hahn’s district includes the City of Artesia, home to a concentration of Indian-owned shops, restaurants, and organizations known as Little India.
In nearby Cerritos, Hahn’s office sponsors the annual celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights that is observed by more than one billion Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists around the world. In 2022, Supervisor Janice Hahn led the effort to have the County recognize Diwali for the first time in history.
