Community Health Outreach: Quemetco
Quemetco is a Battery Recycling plant in the City of Industry neighboring Hacienda Heights. According to the Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) and South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) operations at the plant may have released harmful levels of lead and arsenic into surrounding communities of Hacienda Heights, La Puente, and Avocado Heights. Exposure to high levels of lead and arsenic may cause significant health risks.
Door-to-Door Outreach
This Saturday, September 21st, LA County Public Health workers will be going door to door in neighborhoods surrounding Quemetco to conduct a health questionnaire to understand the concerns and needs of residents and to provide health education materials.
Workers will be wearing blue shirts. If and when they come to your door, please take a few minutes to meet with them.
RESOURCE FAIR
In addition to door-to-door outreach, we will be holding a Public Health Fair about Quemetco at the Hacienda Heights Community Center this Saturday, September 21st from 10am to 2pm.
At the Resource Fair, residents will be able to get results of soil sampling if their home was already tested for lead or arsenic, and other important information from the California Department of Toxic Substances Control.
The Resource Fair will also provide residents with the opportunity to get a free blood lead level test from a Public Health nurse to find out if they are at risk for lead poisoning. Representatives from the Public Health Department, other County departments, and environmental regulatory agencies will be on hand to speak with residents and answer their questions.
