We’re tearing down Men’s Central Jail. It’s dangerous, it’s decrepit, and it’s wholly inconsistent with our values and sense of human decency.
In its place, we’re building a Mental Health Treatment Center which will be staffed by doctors and nurses from the Department of Mental Health. I am confident that this paradigm shift from a “jail-first model” to a “care-first model” will lead to more effective and compassionate care, lower rates of recidivism, and improved public safety.
I am proud that LA County is once again on the leading edge of criminal justice reform. Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard throughout this entire process.
