Los Angeles, CA — Today, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to place a measure to raise much-needed revenue for the Los Angeles County Fire Department on the upcoming March ballot.  If approved by voters, the six-cent parcel tax measure will allow Los Angeles County Fire Department to hire more paramedics and firefighters, update lifesaving equipment, and meet the challenges presented by more frequent wildfires and rising 911 calls.

“Our residents have always been able to count on our LA County firefighters and paramedics in their moment of need, but now they need us,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “Our firefighters are fighting bigger and more dangerous fires and our paramedics are responding to record numbers of 911 medical calls. Their budget has been stretched to the breaking point and we cannot take them for granted. This March, voters will have the opportunity to give these men and women the resources they need to do their jobs protecting communities and saving lives each and every day.”

Los Angeles, CA — Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn has released the following statement regarding the resignation of Peter Lynn, the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority:

“Peter led LAHSA through an historic expansion, from a relatively small agency managing shelters, to a multi-million dollar organization implementing both the County and cities’ homelessness strategies. This was never going to be an easy task but, nevertheless, he welcomed the challenge and his leadership of the agency was important, necessary, and appreciated.

San Pedro, CA-- Today, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn released the following statement after the Norwegian Cruise Ship, "Norwegian Joy," was forced to dock at the Port of Los Angeles for the second time in a week due to passenger illness:

"I am calling on the Center for Disease Control to work closely with our LA County Public Health officials to ensure the passenger illnesses aboard the “Norwegian Joy” do not become an infectious disease outbreak here in the harbor area. This is the second time in a week that this ship has been forced to dock at the Port of Los Angeles due to passenger illness and it raises serious concerns about the hygiene of this ship. If the ship is not cleaned to a point that ensures the health and safety of its passengers, it should not be allowed to leave dock."

Los Angeles, CA — Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, in her role as Chair of the Board of Supervisors, joined California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey to announce a joint lawsuit filed this morning against San Francisco-based electronic cigarette maker, JUUL, Labs, Inc (JUUL).

Los Angeles, CA – On Monday, November 11th, Supervisor Hahn held the inaugural Veterans Day LA event at the newly-renovated Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, joined by LA County veterans, local officials, and community members.

The free event began with a formal ceremony featuring speeches by Supervisor Hahn, Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Lieutenant General Stayce Harris (the first African-American woman to serve as a Lt. General in the Air Force), and other veterans and local officials. During the ceremony, the Memorial Coliseum’s torch was lit at 11 a.m. to mark the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” when World War I ended in 1918.

Los Angeles, CA — Today, the Board of Supervisors passed a motion authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn and co-authored by Supervisor Sheila Kuehl to address the Board and Care crisis throughout LA County.  Adult Residential Facilities and Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly, commonly referred to as “Board and Cares” are vital housing resources for many LA County residents with mental illnesses and other health needs. Board and Cares provide these individuals with a stable home, meals, and various other supportive services.

Bellflower, CA— On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, led by Chair Janice Hahn, committed $1.5 million to fund a new 50-bed shelter in the City of Bellflower. Of the $1.5 million, $700,000 comes from Supervisor Hahn’s Fourth District Provisional Financing funds. The additional funding will be provided by the LA County Department of Health Services.

The pilot project is part of a global effort to stem the flow of 80% of plastics into the world’s oceans

Marina del Rey, CA — Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn announced today a plan to partner with innovative tech nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup to place a new trash harvesting device in Ballona Creek.

“The buildup of plastics in our oceans is one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “We are announcing a plan to install a system that will not only stop trash flowing from Ballona Creek into the Santa Monica Bay, but will be part of a global project to prevent the flow of plastic pollution into our world’s oceans.”

Redondo Beach, CA— Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors announced their intent to create a new financing district to help fund the massive effort to tear down the AES Power Plant in Redondo Beach and replace it with restored wetlands, a new regional park, and private development.

“This power plant is an eyesore and we have an opportunity now to transform this site into a massive regional park and restore some of the wetlands that this power plant destroyed,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “There is plenty of work ahead of us, but this is a major step in returning this prime piece of waterfront real estate to the people.”

Funds $1.4 Million Renovation Project Providing New Technology

Avalon, CA – Yesterday, Los Angeles County Supervisor and Chair of the Board Janice Hahn celebrated the grand re-opening of the Los Angeles County Library system’s smallest branch, the 1,256 square-foot Avalon Library on Catalina Island.

Hahn funded the $1.4 million renovation of the library, which was carried out by the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA).  Owing to the new additions, the Avalon Library is now the first in the system to provide Open+ Technology, allowing customers additional access to the library between 7am-9am before opening.  Other additions to the library include increased ADA accessibility, a larger Spanish-language collection, phone charging stations, and 10 “Grab and Go” Chromebooks.
