Wilmington, CA – This morning, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn welcomed families from around the Harbor Area to her third annual tamal kit giveaway event, one of three she held today. While Hahn previously held two of these giveaway events per year in Southeast Los Angeles and Greater Whittier, this year she expanded her initiative to a third location at Wilmington Waterfront Park, where she delivered welcoming remarks and helped volunteers hand out the kits. Each kit included 10 pounds of fresh tamal masa, corn husks, and dry chile peppers. At each of the three locations—Wilmington, Maywood, and South Whittier—300 such kits were distributed.
“For so many Latino families, it’s just not Christmas without tamales! So I wanted to make sure that no matter their financial situation, these families could participate in this beloved and delicious tradition,” said Hahn. “And it’s been an especially tough year for so many in our communities. This is our chance to help spread some joy.”

Hahn held her first tamal kit giveaways in 2023 in South Whittier and Lynwood, citing the traditional turkey giveaways as inspiration for a holiday giveaway tailored to the communities she represents. Since redistricting in December 2021, Hahn represents a district that is approximately 60% Latino. In 2024, she held them in South Whittier and Walnut Park.
For the giveaways in Maywood and South Whittier, Hahn’s office partnered with Amapola, while partnering with Northgate Market for the Wilmington event. Hahn was joined at Wilmington by Camilo Gonzalez, a member of the Gonzalez family that founded and operates Northgate Market. Hahn also partnered with The Whole Child for the giveaways, an organization that provides a range of services to low-income families. Constanza Pachon, CEO of The Whole Child, and Rick Rodriguez, former mayor of Downey and a board member for the organization, also joined Hahn in welcoming families in Wilmington.
