Hahn Applauds DOJ Inquiry into Torrance Refinery Safety Standards

Los Angeles, CA-Today, Supervisor Janice Hahn released the following statement regarding news that the Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil, the former operator of the Torrance Refinery, for records on a 2015 explosion and a recent leak of modified hydrofluoric acid (MHF):

“The Department of Justice lawsuit is seeking answers to the questions Torrance residents have been asking for years,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “The 2015 explosion raised concerns about whether the refinery could safely store and use modified hydrofluoric acid. Now we know that not only is the refinery plagued by gaps in safety standards, but that five pounds of MHF were accidentally released into the community.  This chemical poses too great a danger to the workers and the public and I urge the AQMD to ban this dangerous substance from our refineries.”
