Supervisor Janice Hahn Demands Torrance Refinery Turn over Information on MHF

Torrance, CA—Today, Supervisor Janice Hahn released the following statement in response to a report out by the US Chemical Safety Board (CSB) on the 2015 explosion at the Torrance Refinery:

“This report is alarming. The US Chemical Safety Board has found that the 2015 explosion was caused by a dangerous lack of safety standards. It is confirmation that luck alone prevented the release of modified hydrofluoric acid (MHF) that day– which could have been deadly. Since the explosion, the refinery has come under new ownership; however I remain unconvinced that these problems have been dealt with and I continue to be concerned for the safety of the local residents and workers. Unfortunately, this report is incomplete because ExxonMobil and PBF Energy have refused to turn over information about their safeguards to prevent or mitigate the release of MHF. Without this information it is impossible to judge whether they have the capability to keep the community safe and I can only assume that they do not. I urge both Exxon and PBF Energy to release this information immediately.”
