Supervisor Hahn to Sponsor Free Outdoor Performances of The Taming of the Shrew and Macbeth
Los Angeles, CA– Today, Supervisor Janice Hahn announced that she will sponsor free performances of The Taming of the Shrew and Macbeth this summer in parks throughout the Fourth District.
Founded in 1998 and funded entirely by donations and grants, Shakespeare by the Sea brings contemporary and classic works to underserved, culturally diverse audiences in order to ignite imagination, promote literacy, and encourage artistic expression
Thanks to Supervisor Hahn’s financial support, Shakespeare by the Sea will perform in La Mirada– a first in the theater company’s nineteen-year history.
Shakespeare by the Sea’s founder and producing artistic director Lisa Coffi said, “Supervisor Hahn has been a longtime supporter of Shakespeare by the Sea – as a Councilwoman, a Congresswoman and now as a Supervisor. The funding she’s provided has allowed us to continue bringing our performances to Whittier and Rowland Heights, but also expand to and perform in a new venue in La Mirada. We’re thrilled to see her continue to support events such as ours that make the arts accessible to audiences who would otherwise be unable to afford it. It’ll be exciting to see how the community of La Mirada reacts to our upcoming performance at their regional park. Whittier and Rowland Heights have grown to love our performances and we hope the families in La Mirada will do so as well.
Supervisor Hahn is sponsoring the following shows this summer:

Wednesday, July 19, 7pm
Rowland Heights: Schabarum Regional Park
The Taming of the Shrew

ABOUT THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
When rebellious Katherina stands in the way of her younger sister Bianca’s marriage, fortune hunter Petruchio is enlisted to “tame” the elder daughter, freeing a path for Bianca’s motley suiters. From their first meeting, sparks fly and the ultimate battle of the sexes ensues – leaving us to wonder, who is taming who?
“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” Seduced by supernatural prophecy, Macbeth and his Lady embark on an ambitious quest to win the Scottish Throne. In the aftermath of their success, we glimpse a world torn apart when a volatile, paranoid tyrant becomes King.
